Johannesburg residents to pay higher rates

Johannesburg residents will have to dig deeper into their pockets.

The city council has finally approved its annual budget for the 2020/2021 financial year.

The majority of political parties have given the budget the thumbs-up, but the EFF has rejected it.

“It is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has turned the global economy upside down, and the City of Johannesburg has not been an exception,” said MMC for Finance, Jolidee Matongo.

The city has withdrawn the proposed fixed charges of R200 for residential and R400 for commercial pre-paid electricity.

  • Property rates will be reduced from the proposed 4.9 percent to 4 percent
  • Water tariff will drop from the initial proposal of 8.6 percent to 6.6 percent
  • Electricity tariff goes down from 8.10 percent to 6.23 percent
