Numsa to protest against possible retrenchments at ArcelorMittal

Numsa will on Monday picket against possible retrenchments at all offices of ArcelorMittal.

The union said it believes the company is contemplating retrenchments.

Numsa accused ArcelorMittal of using COVID-19 as a scapegoat to lay off workers.

The workers will embark on a peaceful picket and then later hand over a memorandum.

Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi said members will be picketing at all the offices of ArcelorMittal “because of the relentless onslaught that AMSA through the backward management of Kobus Verster, the current GCEO, has launched against employees.

“AMSA is in the process of consulting employees as part of Section 189 process, and is contemplating retrenchments.
“It has also proposed that salaries and benefits must be reduced by 20 percent as an alternative to retrenchment,” Hlubi said.

“We believe that the COVID-19 pandemic is being used as an excuse to restructure the organ. Our members are acutely aware of the risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, but they feel that they have no choice but to resort to protest action.

“They will picket peacefully whilst adhering to social distancing regulations.”
