DSTV is growing its local content catalogue

DSTV made announcements at the virtual DStv Showcase event, revealing that it is growing its local content catalogue.

Hosted by DStv on 19 August, the event saw a series of announcements from Mzansi Magic, M-Net, kykNET and Showmax that will continue to give voice to some of the country’s most remarkable storytellers.

“We’re proud to still be at the forefront of African storytelling – it’s a privilege to bring the best of Mzansi, kykNET, M-Net, Showmax and the vast variety of African channels to our customers. Our goal is to continue to be authentic to our audience giving them esteemed productions that are gripping and evoke emotion, and our customers can look forward to another year of just that.” said Nkateko Mabaso CEO of M-Net at MultiChoice Group.

It’s no doubt that for the past 10 years, Mzansi Magic has been commissioning award-winning local content – giving viewers just what they want to see, positioning itself as Africa’s most-loved storyteller and constantly reinforcing its commitment to producing gripping local content for our viewers’ pleasure.

Mzansi Magic continues to showcase riveting content and new seasons of popular and in-demand shows such as Unmarried Season 2, Idols SA season 16 and Ehostela Season 2. Unmarried follows the lives of three women who are navigating the highs and lows of love, friendship and career goals. A successful woman, who has given up on the idea of having it all, has to rethink her ideas of love, children and career.

While others are trying to figure out their love lives and career paths, Idols SA turns sweet 16 this year. After a sensational season 15, ProVerb, Unathi, Randall and Somizi are back looking for the next big singing talent.

Back for yet another season, Uthando Nes’Thembu showcases the ups and downs of what it takes to exist in a polygamous setting and illustrates the true complexities of sharing a husband.

Viewers can also look forward to more firsts on 1Magic, including the witty and entertaining Phat Joe on his celebrity-filled reality show Cheeky Palate.

Trackers – M-Net’s five-part co-production with HBO’s sister channel Cinemax and German broadcaster ZDF, based on the crime novel by best-selling author Deon Meyer, smashed viewership numbers and paved the way for more authentic South African series.

The poignant family drama Still Breathing followed and is the female-driven 13-part drama Inconceivable, launching on 3 September at 20:00.

Even bigger news is M-Net’s very first telenovela, and first daily drama in more than ten years, Legacy, which kicks off on Monday 21 September at 19:00.

And while kykNET continues to expand its array of critically acclaimed Afrikaans content, more international co-productions like Blood Psalms and The Return of Shaka Zulu will take African stories to the world.
