Ministerial Advisory Committee Chairperson Professor Salim Abdool Karim says restrictions on mass gatherings should not be eased yet.
Talks of South Africa moving to lockdown Level 2 continues to gain momentum.
The country has also started recording reduced numbers, implying the number of active cases may be flattening.
Karim is upbeat about the decline in COVID-19 infections but still calls for caution.
He points to countries around the world who have eased lockdown restrictions too quickly, then saw a resurgence of cases and another hard lockdown.
According to Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa is 572,865, with a death toll of 11,270.
