Bheki Cele has wasted no time in enforcing his new legislative powers. During a police walkabout, the minister identified a ‘mask offense’.
No-one plays the pantomime villain quite like Bheki Cele during a tougher version of lockdown. The police minister was on from earlier today, after conducting a walkabout at KwaMashu taxi rank. The police minister was seen enforcing a controversial new law on mask-wearing – but the ‘offender’ managed to avoid detention.
Bheki Cele on patrol
As established on Monday, citizens can be arrested, fined, or even jailed for failing to wear a mask in any public space. The amended restriction has caused divisions across the country, but the ANC veteran was keen to test out his newfound legislative powers when he encountered a forgetful youngster.
The KwaMashu local explained to officers that he had forgotten his mask at home. This wasn’t good enough for Bheki Cele and his team, however. He ordered that the male should be taken to a police van – before community intervention helped spare him the indignity of becoming a very high-profile statistic.
