Medical students wait for placement in internship programme

A medical graduate from the University of Pretoria says she desperately wants to start doing what she loves.

But she and a number of other qualified doctors are waiting to be placed in the National Health Department’s internship programme.

Without a placement, the doctors can’t get jobs.

The graduate says she has tried everything to get answers from the health department.

She believes placing young doctors like herself should be a priority as the second surge of COVID-19 infections grips the country.

For now, she has no choice but to sit idly at home.

The question is why she and others who are qualified to take care of patients during a pandemic are being left in limbo.

The Health Department has not responded to attempts for comment.
