Bodies of 3 children recovered from hole near Gugulethu

The bodies of three children have been recovered from a hole near the N2 Borcherds Quarry intersection in Gugulethu.

Cape Town City firefighters, rescue teams, and Metro EMS were dispatched on Monday afternoon following an emergency call.

According to police, the children apparently played on sand dunes, which caved in on them.

After 6 pm in the evening, the bodies of two boys were found while the third child was discovered after 9 pm last night.

The City of Cape Town’s Jermaine Carelse: “Gugulethu and Mitchells Plain fire crews were dispatched to the scene. The office informed the control centre that three minors fell into a hole. Technical rescue teams from Roeland Street and metro EMS were dispatched.”

He said that operations would continue as a fourth person was unaccounted for.

Police said that an inquest case had been registered for investigation.
