The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in Pretoria says the process to test the safety and efficacy of a herbal product from M5-MediGroup will go ahead.
A group of traditional health practitioners approached the university to conduct the testing. It’s hoping to offer the product to help treat COVID-19.
“The work that we’ll do entails the characterisation of the herbal product in terms of composition, and evaluation for anti-COVID-19 activity,” SMU acting-HoD Biochemistry Stanley Gololo said.
This herbal product is not a vaccine. It falls under the alternative medicine category. If we find efficacy it can serve as a treatment. No deadline has been set for when the tests will be concluded.
SMU professor Joshua Olowoyo said: “The university will administer the medicine or the remedy once the product has been evaluated for safety and efficacy.
“We cannot tell you at this stage that this testing will be for four months or five months. The work is still in progress. Like we have mentioned we need to develop the protocol and continue with the scientific aspect of the research.”
The M5-MediGroup, which compromises of a family of traditional healers, don’t have a fixed price for its herbal remedy yet. The group says it’s eagerly awaiting the findings on its herbal product.
