Norma Mngoma to expose Malusi Gigaba at Zondo commission

Norma Mngoma, the estranged wife of former home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba, is set to appear at the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture.

Mngoma was approached and has agreed to appear at the commission on a date that is yet to be confirmed.

This follows an explosive television interview with eNCA last month, during which she detailed her ex-husband’s dealings with the Gupta family and how the couple’s lifestyle was funded.

According to sources who are close to Mngoma, the socialite and businessperson jumped at the opportunity to have a voice at the Zondo commission because she believes it is a platform to relay details about why she was arrested late last year and what led to the breakdown of her marriage to Gigaba.

“After the interview, they [the Zondo commission] called her and said they wanted her to go to the commission … She will be detailing how the Guptas did favours for Malusi and why she was arrested last year,” a source said.

Mngoma will have her lawyers with her when she goes to testify. She is expected to back up the claims she made against Gigaba in the eNCA interview, which include that the Gupta family gave him bags of money in exchange for favours.

“They used to give him a lot of money, but I don’t know what they gave him money for. Sometimes he used to say he did favours for them so then they would give him money. It was cash all the time. I don’t know what that was for, but he used that money for different things like his lifestyle and to build his home,” Mngoma told the TV channel.

She was arrested by the Hawks in July and charged with malicious damage to property after allegedly causing an estimated R200 000 of damage to a Mercedes-AMG G 63 belonging to an associate of Gigaba, and with crimen injuria for allegedly sending insulting messages to Gigaba’s friend.

Mngoma was kept overnight at Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria and her gadgets were confiscated by the Hawks.

She responded with an urgent court application at the Pretoria High Court, claiming that her arrest was an orchestrated scheme to intimidate, bully and gain unlawful access to her devices.

“At the state capture [commission], she will talk about what was on those gadgets and why Gigaba wanted them so badly. One of the reasons for her to go to the commission is that she was arrested and they said there was a conspiracy to kill Malusi, which is a total fabrication because Malusi and the Hawks were working together to get her gadgets,” the source added.

She is fighting for justice and standing her ground. It is based on him deleting information from her gadgets, and him trying to make her look like a bad person and a crazy woman. He told her to drop the state capture appearance and, in return, he would drop the charges against her.

The source told the publication: “Norma once asked Malusi for a divorce as they had not been sleeping together for two years. They were living in the same house, but had separate bedrooms. She asked him for an amicable divorce in 2019. He refused a divorce and said he did not want them to divorce before he went to the state capture [commission] because he would lose his spousal privilege of not having her testify against him. She was okay with it until last year, when she could not take the abuse from their marriage any more because it was becoming toxic and she did not want their children to see them not sleeping together,

Another source said Mngoma would also take the opportunity to detail how her separation from Gigaba led to her arrest and how Gigaba used the charges against her to bully her out of appearing at the Zondo commission.

“She is fighting for justice and standing her ground. It is based on him deleting information from her gadgets, and him trying to make her look like a bad person and a crazy woman. He told her to drop the state capture appearance and, in return, he would drop the charges against her. She is not having it,” the source said.

The source alleged that the reason Mngoma ended up in jail was that she was under the impression that the car that she damaged belonged to an alleged girlfriend of Gigaba’s, who is known to her.

Mngoma allegedly found out that her husband filed for divorce through an enquiry sent to her by a Sunday tabloid newspaper.

She found out about Malusi divorcing her through Sunday papers,” the source said.

“They were not sleeping together for two years at the time. When the divorce came two months later, everything that was in their divorce letters was there. It was everything Malusi had submitted in his divorce application.

“He then went behind her back and leaked their separation and painted her as if she was refusing to let go of him or grant him the divorce,” the source said.

In response to questions sent to Gigaba, his spokesperson Vuyo Mkhize said: “We will have an opportunity to respond to allegations in great detail once we are informed of the submission of the testimony to the commission.” Commission spokesperson Mbuyiselo Stemela had not responded to questions by the time of going to print.
