R350 grant latest – 5 things you need to know following the extension

If you haven’t heard by now, SASSA’s special R350 COVID-19 grant has been extended by a further three months. The news came during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s annual State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday evening and while it came as good news for beneficiaries that are dependent on grants, there are still quite a few questions that need to be answered.

SASSA has processed in excess of 9,6 million applications each month from May 2020 to January 2021 and has paid more than 6,5 million grants per month. The total amount spent on this grant to date has exceeded R16 billion.

R350 GRANT EXTENSION: DO BENEFICIARIES NEED TO REAPPLY?

Now that the special R350 grant has been extended, some beneficiaries are wondering whether they have to reapply or not. They are wondering what happens if their grant was declined amongst other things. Not to worry though, we are here to answer those questions.

SASSA released a statement on Friday 12 February providing an update on the R350 grant extension. Here are five things beneficiaries should be aware of:

  • There is no need to go to a SASSA office; all SRD processes are done online. Any amendments to your application can be made here;
  • Those persons who have already received this grant and are in the system, need not re-apply;
  • All clients who have been paid through the post office should get bank accounts, and upload those details on the system;
  • Every application will be validated monthly as it has been the case, and if approved will be paid. All applications will be considered monthly, as has been the case; and
  • Clients whose applications for the Special R350 Covid-19 SRD Grant were declined can lodge an appeal for review on the SASSA COVID-19 portal. Declined applicants who already lodged appeals need not re-apply nor re-appeal.

SASSA reassures all citizens who had their Special COVID Grant of 350 approved but not yet paid by end of January will still be paid through the existing payment channels, namely the South African Post Office, direct deposits into bank accounts, or money transfers to cell phones, as requested by the approved applicants,” it said in a statement.

COVID-19 TERS BENEFIT ALSO EXTENDED

Ramaphosa, during SONA 2021, said that as we rebuild the economy in the midst of a pandemic, it is necessary that we continue — within our means — to provide support to those businesses and individuals that continue to be most affected.

Businesses in several sectors are still struggling and many families continue to suffer as the job market slowly recovers. Over the last few months, we have had ongoing discussions with our social partners in business and labor, who proposed an extension of some of the social and economic support,” Ramaphosa said.

Following discussions and consultations, the government, therefore, decided to extend the period for the Special COVID-19 Grant of R350 by a further three months as it proved to be an effective and efficient short-term measure to reduce the immediate impact on the livelihoods of poor South Africans.

It also decided to extend the COVID-19 TERS benefit until 15 March 2021 but only for those sectors that have not been able to operate. Ramaphosa said the conditions of UIF Ters extension and the sectors to be included will be announced after consultations with social partners at NEDLAC.

We will work with our social partners to ensure that these and other interventions provide the relief to those who most need it,” he added.
