The Health Department has an ambitious target — vaccinate nearly 600,000 workers in the education sector within ten days.
The Johnson & Johnson jab will be rolled out to teachers from Wednesday.
But concerns have been raised about the alarming rate of new cases in Gauteng and how slowly the programme has been going.
Thousands of teachers have recently tested positive for COVID-19, many of them in Gauteng.
Teachers’ union Sadtu says the race is on for vaccinations to be completed before regular timetables resume next month.
On Wednesday, 46 vaccination sites will go live, with some new sites to be added later.
For now, South Africa has 300,000 Johnson & Johnson vaccines dedicated to the Basic Education sector, with more doses expected soon.
