The names of the three netball players and one official who perished in a tragic bus accident on their way to the Western Cape for the 2021 Spar National Championships have been revealed.
The fatal crash happened on Sunday in Aberdeen, Eastern Cape at around 4:00am.
The bus was carrying 34 occupants from the OR Tambo district as well as the driver and his assistant when it overturned killing the four.
The fatalities included three players and an official, while others survived with serious to minor injuries.
Thabisile Maxikika, Phelo Charles and Phindile Mfengu are the three players who lost their lives along with team official Nocamagu Mbunyiswa.
The tragedy has slightly overshadowed the start of the annual competition which will run from Monday, 6 December until Saturday, 11 December.
And it was an emotional start to proceedings with a moment of silence and lighting of candles in honour of the deceased during the opening ceremony at DF Malan High School in Bellville, Cape Town.
Netball SA president Cecilia Molokwane said they were saddened by the tragic accident.
“We can’t be in a good mood a nd be celebratory today even if we wanted to,” said NSA president Cecilia Molokwane at the opening ceremony.
“We have lost lives and this is very sad for the Netball fraternity. It’s one life too many. We have lost four, so you can imagine the pain.
“There is actually nothing to celebrate. If we need to celebrate, let’s celebrate the lives of the people that we have lost.”
“We are all in mourning, the people that passed away are part of netball and we are heartbroken by all of this.”
