Khaya Mthethwa (born 25 November 1987), also addressed as the PK, is a South African singer and composer. He also plays many instruments and also is an arranger. 

Emerging the winner of Idol SA reality singing competition season 8 gained him prominence. This earned him a record as the first black person to claim the winning prize.

He is also active in singing and is a member of the Joyous Celebration, a gospel music group. The musical group is popular within and outside the shores of South Africa touching other countries. Topping to what he does is music directing and record producing.

Early Life

Although many know him as “the PK”, he was born Khaya Mthethwa on 25 November 1987 in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal. His parents raised him in the coastal city where he was born.

He was raised under the Christian teachings and doctrines in the church environment.

Bhekithemba Mthethwa, his father, was a minister at the Umlazi Oasis Fellowship Centre. Together with his brother Mnqobi Mthethwa they underwent a strong upbringing.

The parental guidance and support their parents showered them contributed to strengthening his passion for music. After his high school studies, Mthethwa wanted to go into music full time. His parents were not okay with the idea. He then furthered his academic pursuit.

Education

He attended varsity college, where he studied project management. Khaya’s academics did not tamper with the love he had for music. At the church choir, he was the music director during this time.

Khaya Mthethwa got married to Ntandoyenkosi Kunene on 2 December 2017. His beautiful wife is not new to the screen, she is also a winner of a television competition. She is a former Miss South Africa beauty queen. 

The couple met and love fell in love, after three months of dating, they decided to climb a ladder in their relationship.

At first, getting married was not on Khaya’s to-do list but meeting Ntando changed everything. He fell in love with her so much and the love they shared made them a son. They are proud parents of Oyinkosi Mthethwa

Earlier in his love life, he had also dated other celebrated personalities in the entertainment industry. In 2015, Khaya Mthethwa was in a romantic relationship with the popular actress Nomzamo Mbatha. He also dated the beautiful actress Jessica Nkosi.

Career

In 2012, he was featured in the album by Ntokozo Mbambo titled ‘Filled’ album, again as a backing vocalist. In the same year, Khaya entered the singing competition “Idol SA, season 8”.

The main reason for taking part in the competition for him was to try out a different genre. He tried this out to enhance his music abilities but he was too good at what he does. The singer emerged the winner after over eighty percent voted for him.

With much enthusiasm, he entered another television competition “The Clash of The Choirs”. He was a part of the Kwa-Zulu Natal choir and as a group, they came out as winners.

Anyone listening to him wouldn’t help admit that he is good and might have learned from the best. He learned from no one, he taught himself all the instruments he plays. Khaya Mthethwa plays the keyboard, guitar, drums, and percussion.

He writes most of his songs and is the brain behind most of the tracks in his first album titled For You. As a host, he is the man behind the show Gospel Alive which first aired on November 3, 2013.

In 2014, he dropped a live DVD recording and titled it The Uprising. In the year that followed, Khaya became an ordained pastor.

In 2016, he dropped The Dawn and Mkhulumsebenzi followed in 2018. He was also a part of the musical group Joyous Celebration. 

In 2013, he started to appear on the Mzansi Magic religious music talk show Gospel Alive as the host of the show. 

He became the host of the BET gospel show Rhythm on 21 May 2017. Khaya started to host the Sunday morning gospel show Gospel Avenue on SABC1.

In 2017, he was nominated for Live Audio Visual Recording Album (SAMA23).

He was a recipient of the Best Newcomer award at the 12th Annual Metro FM Awards. In 2017, he took home the South African Music Award for Best Contemporary Faith Music Album.

In 2016, he received the SABC Crown Gospel Awards for Best Gospel DVD. He was a recipient of the South African Music Awards for Best Contemporary Faith Music Album in 2019.
