Age

31-year-old Nadia Nakai is a Johannesburg-based South African Hip Hop recording artiAfter graduating from high school in Kenya, she studied a double major in Marketing Communications and Media Studies at Monash Univerenya. Her ancestors can be traced back to Zimbabwe, where she was born.

Career

Nadia decided to pursue a career in television after graduating and appeared on SABC1’s Battle Stations (seasons 1–3). She hosted and presented the daily show Daily Planet on PRTV and attended major events (SAMAs, Metro FM awards, MTV EMAs in Spain, and MTV awards) where she interviewed celebrities.

She then decided to concentrate on her music career and signed with Family Tree Media (2016–2021). According to Forbes, Nadia Nakai has built a strong fan base over time, which has given her much-needed exposure not only in South Africa but around the world. She is highly respected in the South African music industry. Her popularity has seen her win a slew of prizes and sign endorsement deals on a frequent basis.

On June 28, 2019, Nakai released her debut album, ‘Nadia Naked.’ In the 2019 All African Music Awards, the album was nominated for Album Of The Year in Southern Africa. She had previously released an extended play (EP) in 2016 called ‘Bragga.’

Casper Nyovest

Nadia joined Nyovest’s team at Family Tree Media in 2016. There, she released her first single, “Money Back”, with the label. This song was well-received, and it went on to be used as a promotional tool soundtrack for a number of shows/commercials, including MTV Base and South Africa’s ETV soap-opera  Rhythm City. Nadia’s hit was followed by the publication of her EP, “Bragga.”  On the iTunes hip hop chart, Bragga debuted at number two. Nadia Nakai’s hit single “Naaa Meaan” starring Cassper Nyovest was released in 2017.  Nakai became the first SA female hip hop artist to reach a million views on YouTube. This music video was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Video.

Asked if she and Casper were dating, Nadia dismissed the thought citing that Nyovest is family and nothing romantic was brewing there. They had a good work relationship and she holds Casper in the highest regard because he played an instrumental role in shaping her music career. Nyovest did mention how he’ll miss hanging out with her after she left the label.

New Label, Bragga Records

2021 has been a great year for Nakai as she has defied many odds to launch her own record label, Bragga Records. Being a female rapper in South Africa is no easy feat, and she is giving her male counterparts a run for their money. Signed to Def Jam Recordings Africa, Bragga is a new baby that’ll make waves, if Nakai’s reputation is anything to go by.

We wish her well in all her endeavours and continue to hope that we’ll have all Nakai and Bragga’s new music in easy to reach places like Shoprite specials or MTN’s MusicTime.
