Early Life

She was born Basetsana Makgalemele on 29 March 1974 in Soweto, South Africa. Her parent’s names are Philip Makgalemele and Beatrice Makgalemele.

She grew up in an average South African home with her father being a bus driver while her mother is a school teacher.

Basetsana has a brother and also two sisters, while they grew up, they would make sandwiches to sell during football matches over the weekends. She lost her father in 2003 and later in 2006, her mother died.

Education

She began to study at Thabisang Primary School in Soweto. Later, she furthered at Trinity Secondary School in Lenasia. After matriculating from the school, Kumalo enrolled at the University of Venda and majored in an Education course. She also attended the Damelin.

At 16, she became the titleholder of Miss Soweto between 1990 and 1991. Basetsana entered into the Miss South Africa pageant and won the crown.

As the reigning Miss SA, Khumalo became the presenter on the lifestyle TV show Top Billing. She entered into a partnership with the producer of the show Patience Stevens.

Tswelopele Productions was launched with the celebrated beauty owning a 50% stake. The best product from the company is the Top Billing television show which was produced for SABC3.

Later in 1999, Tswelopele had to merge with Union Alliance Media. It was listed on the JSE Securities Exchange in South Africa.
