Constance Wu (born 22 March 1982) is a highly-prolific Chinese-American actress and television personality. She is multifaceted and confident bagging many accolades and awards.

She does her work so well and is the recipient of four Critics’ Choice Awards, and two TCA Awards, among others. In 2007, the renowned actress was included on Time magazine’s list of the Top 100 Most Influential People In The World.

She is a recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Early Life

Constance Wu was born on 22 March 1982 in Richmond, the capital city of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. Her parents were literate.

Her father’s name is Fang-Sheng Wu, he works as biology and genetic professor at the prestigious Virginia Commonwealth University.

Her mother works as a computer programmer. Wu’s paternal grandfather and grandmother were very poor. To make ends meet, they worked as bamboo farmers. They did not get the opportunity to get an education and so they were illiterates.

Her parents had four daughters, Wu is the third daughter of her parents.

Education

Constance Wu studied at the Douglas S. Freeman High School. She started to perform in Henrico County-based local theatre. She attended lessons for six months while in high school at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

Wu studied for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting at the State University of New York at Purchase’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts. She says that the Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee influenced her.

She studied psycholinguistics and studied for a degree program in speech pathology at Columbia University. After graduating, she entered the movie and film industry. In search of greener pastures, she moved to the center of the nation’s film and television industry Los Angeles.

Constance Wu met actor and producer Ben Hethcoat in December 2011. The pair dated until February 2018. She disclosed that Asian incels dragged her for dating a white man Hethcoat.

With time, she healed and moved on as she found love in the arms of Ryan Kattner. Her boyfriend is the frontman of the band Man Man.

The duo welcomed their first daughter in the summer of 2020. Wu lives in the sprawling Southern California city of Los Angeles with her pet rabbit, Lida Rose.

She moved away from New York to Los Angeles in 2010 without Forethought after suffering a heartbreak.

Career

In 2015, Wu joined the ABC television comedy Fresh Off the Boat. She starred as Jessica Huang in the comedy show until 2020, this was a breakthrough role for her. She was a four-time nominee for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.

Constance Wu was highly praised for playing Rachel Chu in the 2018 American romantic comedy-drama Crazy Rich Asians. 

The role earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. Wu received more admiration for starring in the 2019 crime drama film Hustlers.

Wu has appeared in many onstage and independent films. Her supporting role in the 2006 Drama/Indie film titled Stephanie Daley is credited as her screen debut.

Later she played supporting roles in the 2007 American animated film Year of the Fish and the 2006 American drama film titled The Architect.

In 2007, she played a recurring role as Laudine Lee on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live. After moving to the City of L.A, she was a cast member of the Zal Batmanglij-directed film titled Sound of My Voice.
