Give your House to Yahoo Boys and Risk 15 Years in Prison

Who are Yahoo Boys anyway?

Famously known as the champaign poppers, Many undergraduates in Nigerian universities engage internet fraud due to lack of employment. Nicknamed “yahoo-yahoo” after the international web portal and search engine, this nickname has become a way of life for the young con-artists.

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission has issued a stern warning to house owners that they may risk 15 years in jail if they accommodate internet fraudsters otherwise known as Yahoo Boys.

The anti-graft agency made it know known on their Instagram page @officialefcc on 28 June 2022, ahead of their next edition of its public conversation series tagged #EFCCConnect which has been slated to be held on 29 June, 2022 on a Twitter Space. The officials of the agency will be educating the populace more about their new policy on the space.

The EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, had earlier visited owners of hotels in Ilorin. His visit was to create awareness in the hospitality industry, and as well, to see how they can work together to curb cybercrime in the society.

The EFCC Zonal Chairman has accused the hotel owners as being complicit in cybercrime by making the Internet available for, and accommodating fraudsters.

The agency says that the law is blind and deaf to the reality that hotel owners may not be able to tell who amongst their patronizers are fraudsters.

It has also warned that the hospitality business should devise a means of getting the identity of customers before they are lodged in.

Identity means such as cards, or a few other information about them would go a long way to tracking them in the event they have sinister intentions for lodging.

The new policy has seen a lot of reactions from the online community. Many users have expressed their dissatisfaction with the new policy and pointed out that it is a bit flawed. They opined that it is almost impossible to know a person who is involved in cybercrime.

Aside from that, it also puts landlords at risk of wrong arrests for housing tech employees who could be mistaken for fraudsters.

Perhaps the new policy needs to be reviewed and be devoid of emotions. There is bound to be misunderstanding if the law finally stands without a bit of review.

Well, for now, nothing much can be said until the Twitter Space has been held and the outcome of the online meeting has been well understood. Stay tuned for more updates on this.
