Leonardo Castro on why he dumped Mamelodi Sundowns for Kaizer Chiefs

Colombian striker Leonardo Castro has revealed his reasons behind a controversial move from Mamelodi Sundowns to Kaizer Chiefs.

The tall and talented goal poacher has since been axed by the Soweto giants and his future remains a subject of speculation.

Castro is interested in staying in South Africa because his children are attending school and his wife loves the country, but he still has to find a new football home.

In a recent interview with Marawa Sports Worldwide, the ‘Colombian Sniper’ says he did not agree with what the Brazilians offered and opted to join the Naturena club.

“At Sundowns, it was like any player at other clubs, it’s business you know [to make a transfer],” Castro told MSW.

“We talking about at that [new contract at] time about business and I did not agree. So that’s why I took the decision, it’s the right time to leave because I was facing another option. Obviously, my family is first, so I had to make sure what is the better option.

“You call it like this, it was happening exactly the same. That’s why it was the main reason I leave sundowns at that time.”

His agent, Baber Siddique, confirms there are options available for his client but the local clubs have already filled their foreign spots.

Castro’s handler also added that they are hoping for the player to receive an offer similar to or close to what he earned at Amakhosi.

“For him to stay in South Africa it should be with any club that can offer him a reasonable contract closer to what he was getting at Chiefs,” said Siddique according to KickOff.

“Apart from that Leo also wants to stay here for the sake of his children’s education plus his wife likes South Africa so she prefers to stay here which is why we all want him to stay here.

“We have engaged a few clubs but some other clubs have full foreign spaces so they cannot take him.”

The 33-year-old leaves Chiefs after joining in 2018 and played in 122 matches across all competitions while finding the back of the net on 27 occasions over four seasons.
