DRESSING FOR YOUR BODY SHAPE

It is very important to stay true to who you are regardless the pressures of the society. Women come in all shapes and sizes.  We can’t all be supermodels, but we can all look fabulous. Sometimes it just means understanding your curves (or lack thereof) and how to make them look their best.

The fashion industry generally refers to four body shapes:

Pear shape

Description: You have a small chest and are curvier on the bottom with junk in the trunk and shapely thighs.

Who: Think Beyonce, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez and Alicia Keys.

Fashion tips: Create balance with well-fitted, horizontal stripes on top, and dark, solid colours on the bottom.

Apple shape

Description: Your upper body is bigger than your lower half and your legs are you best asset.

Who: Grey’s Anatomy’s Sara Ramirez (Dr Callie Torres), Jennifer Hudson and America Ferrera are classic apple shapes.

Fashion tips: guard against dreaded muffin top with high-waisted jeans or leggings with a long top/short dress. Enhance your waist with a belt and sport a structured blazer to give your top half some shape.

Hourglass

Description: As the name implies, you are busty with a small waist and shapely thighs.

Who: Famous hour glass celebrities include Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson and Kim Kardashian.

Fashion tips:  Draw attention to your waist with a skinny belt over a cardigan, A-line skirts with cropped jackets look fabulous and peplum styled tops and dresses were made for you.

Athletic

Description:  Also known as rectangular shape, athletic body shapes have long torsos, are naturally muscular with broad shoulders but would kill for some curves.

Who: Cameron Diaz, Naomi Campbell and Jada Pinkett Smith embrace their athletic shape.

Fashion tips:  Embrace details like ruffles and pleats for a feminine affect. Flared jeans and full skirts also create a nice shape. A-line dresses and horizontal stripes are your friend.

No matter what shape you are, learn to love it.  Whenever you find yourself jealous of someone else’s body, remember that there is someone who longs for your curves.  Dress for yourself and not to impress others.
