A look at South Africa’s most popular TV shows

After a stressful day at work, you can’t beat settling down with a snack and watching a television show or two, can you? In fact, for many people around the world, TV shows are a popular choice due to their shorter length than a movie, alongside the entertainment they provide. In South Africa, there have certainly been some truly iconic television shows over the years, with many still going strong today.

We live in a modern environment that is filled with an array of entertainment options, but diving in for a binge of a favourite television show is still a desired entertainment option for most people. Of course, the occasional movie might be watched on a popular streaming service and mobile users are accessing games like the Crazy 7 slot, but catching up on a television show is still an attractive proposition for many. From tuning in to watch a lesser-known gem to following the latest developments in a show everyone is talking about in the office, South African audiences aren’t short on shows either. At the time of writing, though, some TV shows are pulling in more viewers than others. Let’s take a look at some of them below.

Skeem Saam

Although Skeem Saam had 7.9 million viewers in April 2019, it has since declined somewhat with a solid enough audience of 6.5 million. Still, despite its small drop-off in viewing numbers, it’s a show many people still don’t want to miss given its 8.5/10 rating on IMDb. A teen drama that is adored by younger audiences in the country in particular, it has claimed an array of awards, such as the Golden Horn Award for the Most Popular Soap. Creator Winnie Serite has certainly nailed this one, although just why audiences have diminished since 2019 remains a mystery.

Muvhango

In a modern environment where technology-based innovation is taking over, sometimes the more traditional aspects of living can be forgotten. A show that focuses on the old and the new way of doing things, Muvhango has 5.3 million viewers at the time of writing, making this intriguing and highly interesting soap opera one of the most popular television shows right now. Different ways of living can function alongside each other but sometimes, as Muvhango shows, there can be clashes.

Uzalo

At the time of writing, Uzalo has over 10 million loyal viewers who tune in to watch this superb three-part drama. Easily one of the most famous South African soaps, many people can identify with the story given the focus on two families, although the horrific secret that soon becomes evident would certainly cause distress to many. With a 6.2/10 rating on IMDb and 84% worth of likes by Google Users, Uzalo is hugely popular with audiences, although there have been times when audiences have been left fuming by specific storylines. Overall, though, Uzalo is well worth a watch.

Yet another well-liked soap opera in South Africa, Generations: The Legacy offers a heart-warming vibe overall as people in the show aim to make the most of their lives during what can be turbulent times. With the show filmed all over the country, people immediately warmed to it. Additionally, it is a talked-about production that is regularly dominating the debates online and being spoken about in local shops. Now, given its undoubted success over the years, Generations: The Legacy has 9 million viewers.

Other popular TV shows in South Africa includes Scandal (5.4 million viewers), Rhythm City (4.3 million viewers), Imbewu: The Seed (3.3 million viewers), iNkaba, The Wild, and 7de Laan (2.58 million viewers).
