Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana star Themba Zwane has debunked the talk that age matters in football, preferring to say his best is yet to come.
Zwane was instrumental for Bafana as they downed Sierra Leon via a 4-0 scoreline last weekend and he says he is inspired by the top and older international players.
Mshishi, as Zwane is known, says players such as Thiago Silva and Dani Alves are a true example that football is not played based on age but on pure talent and determination.
The Tembisa-born star, Zwane, recently earned a recall to Bafana and was the star of the show on Saturday, scoring a brace, as Bafana beat Sierra Leone 4-0 in an international friendly.
Speaking to the SAFA media department after the win and probing coach Hugo Broos wrong after he was snubbed for some time, Zwane said there are many top professionals still playing at the highest level in their late thirties, and he will carry on playing as long as his legs allow.
“Age is nothing but a number, but it’s all about how you carry yourself,” Zwane told SAFA media.
“There are top players overseas that encourage us. They are old now, but they are still playing at the highest level.
“I can make an example of Thiago Silva now, he’s 37 now, and he’s still playing at Chelsea. And Dani Alves is still performing.
“So I told myself that if those guys can still [be] pushing themselves, why not? I’m still gonna push myself.
“As long my legs allow me to go on, I’ll still go and I’m just trying to be a good example to the youngsters that if you are serious about your career, you can go far.”
Meanwhile, the South Africans will pin their hopes on the Sundowns skipper as they will face Botswana on Tuesday night in another friendly international at FNB Stadium – kick-off is at 18:00.
