Expensive Magwinya: Hotel in Sandton sells fat cake for more than R100.00

A hotel in Johannesburg specialing in traditional food usually found in many South African townships, has something unique and a fat cake sells for over R100.00.

The hotel, Hyatt House, recently opened its doors in Sandton and operates a dark kitchen restaurant, with local foods like kotas, vetkoek, chicken dust, and pap available to order exclusively through Uber Eats.

Fat cakes stuffed with mince meat sell for R109 and a kota – a quarter loaf of white bread filled with chips, polony, beef sausage, spicy mango atchar, cheese, and a grilled burger patty – costs R135.

Business Insider SA reports that the hotel in Johannesburg’s upmarket suburb of Sandton opened in November 2021 and it is owned by an affiliate of Millat Properties, the establishment caters to extended stays with 43 residentially inspired studios and 19 suites with separate living rooms.

Now, the hotel is maximising its kitchen’s capacity, by launching a new brand that offers “wholesome, uncomplicated foods” for delivery only.

In the dark kitchen, clients can be able to buy meals such as pap and nyama, magwinya or vetkoek, chicken and le dombolo or dumplings, and kota.

\“Millat Investments has been looking for opportunities to expand into the food and beverage sector to create new income streams. The dark kitchen concept makes perfect sense because we are using existing facilities to provide South Africans with a different, but very local food experience,” said CEO Hamza Farooqui.

“A huge benefit of a dark kitchen approach is tapping into the resources. Experienced staff is in place, and existing supply chains allow us to tap into the procurement process with ease. Dhaba and Gimba will be focused on the Rosebank and Sandton areas initially, with plans to take the brands to the Cape Town market at a later stage.”

Dark kitchens – also referred to as ghost kitchens – have become especially popular over the past two years, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, which drove a surge in demand for takeaways.

Gimba is one such dark kitchen, sharing the space where food is prepared for guests of Hyatt House in Sandton. Uber Eats lists Gimba’s location as 125 Ann Crescent in Sandton, where Hyatt House is located.
