Shakira faces eight years behind bars for R250 million tax fraud case

It seems back luck follows Shakira as she is allegedly facing a court battle with Spanish authorities owing to tax fraud allegations.

The musician, Shakira, has been formally ordered by a Spanish court on Tuesday after failing to pay about R250 million in taxes.

Shakira, Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, is set to stand trial on accusations that she failed to pay €14.5m in income taxes, a court document released on Tuesday showed.

The Colombian superstar, Shakira, rejected a deal in July to settle the matter and the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer’s rejection meant she would have to stand trial in a case that could see her sent to prison for eight years.

According to a report carried by various websites including SowetanLIVE, the 45-year-old Shakira has been ordered by The Esplugues de Llobregat court on Tuesday as it confirmed the trial will go ahead on a date yet to be announced.

It’s reported that the prosecutor is seeking an eight-year jail term for the singer, who is accused of failing to pay taxes between 2012 and 2014, a period in which she said she was leading a “nomadic life” because of her work,” reports the news portal.

Meanwhile, her legal team said the situation has not changed and everything continues in a normal way, saying it will do everythinh to defend the singer.

“The order to send Shakira to trial is another step in any proceedings of this kind. The situation has not changed and everything continues as normal. Shakira’s legal defence will do its job by presenting its written arguments at the appropriate time,” her lawyers said.

In adition, Shakira also vowed last week to fight what she claimed were “false” accusations by Spanish authorities, and said she had paid what the Spanish tax office said she owed before they filed a lawsuit.

Meanwhile, Entertainment SA posted that Shakira has broken her silence on her split from footballer Gerard pique, she revealed that the breakup came at one of the “darkest hours” of her life.

The Colombian singer split from the FC Barcelona star in June after 11 years of dating.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer, 45, explained in her October 2022 Elle digital cover story that she has purposely “remained quiet” since her split from the soccer player, 35, first made headlines in early June, as she was still trying “to process it all.
