Eleven people have reportedly died from a stampede at Fally ipupa’s concert in the biggest stadium in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s capital.
The martyr’s stadium has an 80,000 capacity and reports said it was full to the brim for the favorite performance, with one witness saying “even the corridors” of the stadium were overflowing.
The country’s interior minister, Daniel aselo okito, released a statement on Sunday 30th October, and blamed the organizers for the deaths, he condemned the frequent loss of human life and damage to equipment during such events and added that the organizers must be punished.
“It was a stampede,” that caused the deaths, a policeman on the scene told the official Congolese Press Agency. “The music lovers suffocated.”
Kinshasa Police chief General Sylvain Sasongo had earlier told ACP nine people had died, amid reports the venue had been absolutely jammed with people.
Fally ipupa has reacted to the incident, taking to Facebook, Ipupa wrote, “Following what we accomplished together yesterday, I had planned for today to send a message of joy and satisfaction beyond the evils our dear country is going through. Unfortunately, despite all the arrangements made for strict compliance with safety instructions, some unfortunate and dramatic incidents enameled the end of the concert.
“Indeed, it appears from the elements at our disposal that following some scuffle at the exit and around the stadium, compatriots were snatched alive. I am deeply disturbed and my deepest condolences to all the families. May God in his deepest mercy comfort the bereaved hearts.”
The music star, like all Congolese singers, had arrived several hours after the show had been scheduled to start according to sources.
