Marcus Rashford of Manchester United has lauded the influence of legendary South African striker Benni McCarthy.
The former Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United striker was identified by Red Devils manager Eric Ten Hag at the start of the season to join his technical team in order to hone the club’s strike force.
McCarthy appears to have done just that, earning the respect of some of the club’s most powerful figures.
The England international has four goals and two assists in 13 games this season, the same total he had in 26 games last season, earning him a spot in the Three Lions squad for the 2022 World Cup.
Rashford scored in the League Cup against Aston Villa on Thursday night, which was reflected in his Improved performances since McCarthy’s arrival on Sky Sports News.
“He’s helped me a lot. To have them attack-minded coaches is good for us in the squad, he’s always there speaking to us about these things,” said Rashford.
This isn’t the first time Rashford has been credited with a goal for his former Bafana Bafana side.
Following Rashford’s goal against West Ham, which was widely shared on social media recently, Man United fans felt McCarthy was being thanked by Ten Hag’s assistant Mitchell van der Gaag.
The quick forward scored an unexpectedly powerful header to give United all three points against West Ham at Old Trafford.
Following a brief handshake between Haag and Van Der Gaag, it appeared that the assistant boss called out ‘Benni!’ to thank him for his work with Rashford.
