How much does Mariah Carey make from her hit song “All I Want For Christmas Is You”?

Mariah Carey is one of the most successful (and talented) female musical artists of all time. Even if she isn’t the Queen of Christmas, she is a pop and R&B music icon with hits like “We Belong Together,” “Always Be My Baby,” “Hero,” and “Fantasy.”

It’s no secret, however, that she thrives during the holiday season. So, how did she come to be known as the Queen of Christmas? How much money does she make from her Christmas songs and tours?

How Mariah Carey Became the Queen of Christmas

“All I Want For Christmas Is You,” her most famous Christmas song, was released in 1994 on her first Christmas album, Merry Christmas. The well-known song celebrates both love and Christmas. She stated at the time of the song’s release, “I’m a very festive person, and I love the holidays. I’ve sung Christmas songs since I was a little girl. I used to go Christmas caroling.”

“I wrote it just out of love for Christmas and like really loving Christmas music,” she said in a 2015 interview. In the 28 years since its release, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 during multiple Christmas seasons, though it did not reach #1 until 2019. Though the song has always been popular, it saw a surge in popularity following the 2003 release of Love Actually, in which Joanna Anderson (Olivia Olson) famously covered the song at a Christmas pageant at the film’s climax. It’s been used in dozens of other films and is available on any music streaming platform.

Because of social media, the song has grown in popularity with each Christmas season, and Carey capitalised on the song’s success by releasing a second Christmas album in 2010. All I Want for Christmas Is You: A Night of Joy and Festivity, her annual Christmas tour, began in 2014.

“All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which reportedly took only 15 minutes to write, is Mariah Carey’s “biggest international success, the 12th best-selling single of all time, and the best-selling Christmas single by a female artist overall.”

Mariah Carey Embraces Her Christmas Crown

Mariah Carey is not only aware of her status as the Queen of Christmas, but she embraces it (as she should) on social media and elsewhere. Her status as the Queen of Christmas has spawned memes, with one joking that she was “defrosting” before Halloween going viral in October.

This year, Carey joined in on the memes. In one Instagram video posted on October 28, she began singing “All I Want for Christmas Is You” before being attacked by a monster who informed her that it wasn’t yet time. In the second reel, which was released on November 1, she is dressed as a cackling witch before changing into a Christmas outfit when the clock strikes midnight. She even has a hashtag – #MariahSZN.

This year, she went all out with a new Christmas tour, Merry Christmas To All, in New York and Toronto, as well as the release of The Christmas Princess, a children’s Christmas book. This isn’t her first non-musical Christmas venture; in 2015, she published another children’s Christmas book, All I Want For Christmas Is You, and directed and starred in a Hallmark Christmas movie, A Christmas Melody.

How Much Does She Make from “All I Want for Christmas”?

There are various estimates of how much Mariah Carey earns each Christmas season from the song “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” but it’s thought to be a significant portion of her income. According to one 2017 report, she earns around $2.6 million per year in the United States alone, while another estimates her annual royalties to be between $600,000 and $1 million. Though these figures are impressive, they do not include how much she earns from her Christmas tours and shows, implying that her status as the Queen of Christmas could account for nearly half (if not more) of her annual earnings. Mariah Carey’s net worth is estimated to be $320 million in 2022.

Mariah Carey is the Queen of Christmas, from her hit song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” to her Christmas tours, Christmas books, and hilarious Christmas-related Instagram posts. Every year, she adds to her legacy, so she’s unlikely to be dethroned anytime soon!
