The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is mourning the death of one of its versatile news readers, Pearl Shongwe.
Entertainment SA has gathered that Shongwe passed away on Tuesday and the SABC has also confirmed the sad news.
The seasoned broadcaster, Shongwe, was also the host of a talk show, Daily Thetha as she read the news on Metro FM.
It is now reported by various media outlets that Shongwe passed away in her sleep and she was 35 at the time of her passing.
“It is with great sadness that the Shongwe family announces the untimely passing of our beloved daughter Ntombifuthi Pearl Shongwe,” the newsreader’s family confirmed in a statement to News24.
“Our daughter was a celebrated radio broadcaster and TV presenter. Her presence will forever live on in our hearts.”
News24 has it that Shongwe’s lifeless body was discovered by neighbours on Tuesday, as per a statement.
Shongwe’s family has since asked for privacy during their time of mourning, adding that memorial details would be shared in due course and it’s reported that the cause of death has not been confirmed.
Taking a glance at her career, Shongwe, launched her broadcasting career in 2010 when she worked for the youth radio station YFM as an entertainment reporter.
She went on to work as a floor MC at Silverstar Casino, and as a reporter for SABC Sport. She also lent her voice to the broadcaster’s flagship programs, including a children’s sports show, Sports Buzz.
“The SABC has learned through the family of Pearl Shongwe that she has sadly passed away. The SABC extends its heartfelt condolences to the Shongwe Family,” read a tweet from the SABC.

“You may be gone but you will never be forgotten Pearl Shongwe. Your contribution in the broadcasting landscape and media industry, in general, was immense. You were of excellence all the time.”
