Slindile Nodangala on why she can’t escape ‘Mam Ruby’

Having made her name in the entertainment industry as an actress on Generations, Slindile Nodangala says the name ‘Mam Ruby’ follows her wherever she goes.

The seasoned actress who hails from Umlazi, Nodangala says she is now involved in The River where she plays a challenging role as Nolwazi.

In a chat with Drum magazine, Nodangala struggles to find answers as to why the ‘Mam Ruby’ character stuck with her but it’s evident that she gave it life.

“I don’t know what it is about her, but she follows me everywhere I go,” actress Slindile says.

Slindile left Generations about eight years ago but acting the role of a no-nonsense yet much-loved shebeen queen really impressed her admirers.

The charismatic thespian explains she made efforts to escape her but she is aware the role impacted positively to many people.

“I have tried for years to escape her, but I can’t. I cannot really say why she had such an impact that people do not forget about her,” she added.

“Maybe izidudla (plus size women) felt liberated because they saw a confident woman who looked like them. She was always true to herself, and she did not allow anyone to talk down on her.

“Art imitates life and as an actress, you never know to what extent will a character you play influence people. By just going to work in order to provide for your family and put bread on the table, you end up inspiring someone or you change the way they view themselves or their situation.”

Touching on her new role in Mzansi Magic’s The River. Nodangala reveals that Nolwazi was Lindiwe Dlamini Dikana’s entitled sister. Sindi Dlathu plays Lindiwe.

She explains Nolwazi was not necessarily evil, but just someone who is self-absorbed and entitled as well as selfish.

“Oh, Nolwazi was such a challenge to play because she was so annoying,” she continued.

“As actors, we get words on a page, and we need to give them life. Add bone marrow, flesh, and skin in order for the character to come alive. Wherever I am, I’m always learning a thing or two from the people around me because I know that one day, I may have to play a character similar to them.”

“She only cares about herself. Nolwazi has only one agenda in life and that is to live a soft life. She is just not prepared to work for it. She forgets about yesterday, tomorrow will see itself, and yena she is only focused on today.”

Nodangala says she didn’t want to become a teacher, nurse, or join the police force but she is grateful to arts legend Gibson Kente who trained her.
