Miss Universe for Bonang? The South African celebrity is on the ‘shortlist’ for the role of new host.
South Africans are rallying around a rumour that Bonang Matheba is a strong possibility to succeed Steve Harvey as Miss Universe presenter.
Out with the old and in with the young, South African-born. That’s the opinion among South African Twitter users who support local girl Bonang Matheba’s bid to succeed Steve Harvey as Miss Universe presenter.
Harvey was supposedly fired as a long-time host after the beauty competition switched broadcasters. According to rumours, Bonang does not require a public campaign because she is already a strong candidate for the position.
The Miss Universe pageant will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 14, 2023.
BONANG APPEARS ON THE MISS UNIVERSE SHORTLIST
Steve Harvey stepped down as Miss Universe pageant host earlier this month after five years.
The actor and performer was reportedly fired when the contest was relocated to the Roku streaming service. According to Variety, the new channel was looking for new, fresh blood – specifically, a female to lead the show.
The name of the main lady host will be revealed in the coming weeks, according to Miss Universe Organization CEO Amy Emmerich.
She said in a statement, “My goal was really to make sure we led with a female lens this next go-around. We should hopefully have that to talk about soon… It was a rare opportunity to be able to kind of restart in a whole new place.”
However, according to another rumour, there is already a shortlist for the post, which includes Bonang Matheba’s name.
The South African media personality has previously presented Miss South Africa, the Global Citizen event, and a variety of other award shows and corporate appearances.
TV celebrities Zuri Hall, Jeannie Mai, Catriona Gray, and Ashley Graham are among strong contenders for the role of host.
MZANSI BACKS THE CALL
While the new Miss Universe host has yet to be named, South Africans on Twitter are aggressively campaigning on Bonang’s behalf.
Here’s what Twitter users had to say:
@Papirazzi_: “I swear Bonang Matheba would shake the world with her hosting skills.”
@ZoPlaatjie: “Choosing Bonang would be the game changer they need & it WILL serve them well. Winners choose winners!”
@Pinky94928477: “Honestly, it’s not just Bonangs presenting. It’s a package. It’s her energy, her voice, her laugh, her vibe, her professionalism, her style last but not least, her beauty.”
@mykutlo_bee: “Bonang is the girl for the job, and @MissUniverse won’t regret it.”
