The most-liked Instagram post ever is a slideshow of Lionel Messi celebrating Argentina’s World Cup victory.
The player garnered more than 65 million likes only hours after sharing it, and the figure is continually growing.
Argentina won the World Cup for the first time in 36 years after defeating France on penalties in the final on Sunday in Qatar.
Messi’s Instagram image received millions more likes than the previous record-holder, a simple photo of an egg.
What was it you said about an egg?
The previous most-liked status bearer was, in fact, an egg.
When it originally surfaced, it looked to be some kind of anti-celebrity protest poll, with people encouraged to interact with the image in the hopes of dethroning the then-record holder, Kylie Jenner.
The make-up entrepreneur previously set the record with her 2018 photo announcing the birth of her daughter Stormi, which has already received 18 million likes.
Jenner was the first woman to reach 300 million followers on the social networking platform, a feat Messi also accomplished.
That’s OK, but it still doesn’t explain the egg.
There was much conjecture about who was behind the @world record egg Instagram account and how it accumulated so many likes so rapidly.
Some thought it was a marketing trick by a huge corporation that had purchased followers, but British advertising executive Chris Godfrey has subsequently said he built it with two others and that their main goal was to acquire as many likes as possible.
While the egg broke Jenner’s record (57 million and counting), it was eventually overtaken by a rival with many world records of his own: Lionel Messi.
Guinness World Records published a list of records broken by the winner following the World Cup final, noting Messi had eclipsed Germany’s Lothar Matthäus for the record of most World Cup matches played, with 26, as well as four other records:
- 11 – most World Cup Man of the Match awards
- 19 – most World Cup appearances as captain
- 5 – most appearances in World Cup tournaments by a male player
- First person to assist (a goal) at five different World Cups
Messi now has another record to add to his collection, thanks to the popularity of his newest Instagram gallery.
