Lupita Nyong’o makes her romantic debut with Hugh Masekela’s son, Selema

Lupita Nyong’o recently made her Instagram relationship with Hugh Masekela’s son public.

The Black Panther actress has revealed her relationship with Selema Masekela, son of ‘the pioneer of South African jazz,’ Hugh Masekela.

“We just click!” Nyong’o captioned a video of herself with her boyfriend.

While the relationship may have taken some by surprise, E! News points out that the signals of a romance were always present.

Masekela, co-founder of the surf gear brand Mami Wata, sponsored an exclusive launch event in March to commemorate the opening of America’s first African surf shop in Venice, California, and Nyong’o was, of course, present.

The actress stood by her lover during the launch of the brand’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection and the screening of Mami Wata’s latest short film, Luck is Alive.

A surf film narrated by Masekela made its African debut in August at the Labia Theatre in Cape Town.

Sweet Adventure, directed by Emmy Award-winning South African director Peter Hamblin, was chosen to complete a cycle that began in 1966, when the father of South African surfing, John Whitmore, screened The Endless Summer for the first time in Africa.

Masekela’s background as a well-known American television presenter, sports pundit, and actor is highlighted in the film. His sarcastic humour and scathing scorn for current attitudes are the ideal counterpoint to Hamblin’s brilliant use of camera technique and editing.
