South African hip hop artist Priddy Ugly has bagged the lyricist of the year award during the South African Hip Hop Awards ceremony.
Just after his massive victory, Ricardo ‘Priddy Ugly’ Moloi headed to social media to urge fans not to create unnecessary beef between local hip-hop musicians.
During the SA Hip Hop event held on Tuesday in Johannesburg, K.O’s smash hit SETE walked away with Song of the Year while Gigi LaMayne scooped the Best Female accolade.
Making a comeback after a two-year hiatus, the 11th edition of the annual awards, under the theme Hip Hop Kult-ure, the glittering ceremony was staged on Tuesday in Johannesburg.
The organisers said the nominees were chosen from more than 2000 submissions across 24 categories but Ugly seems to have a message for his fans.
He argued that there is a need for a conversation about toxic fans as he admitted that hip-hop artists can be toxic too, however, one day there will be a discussion on how toxic the “fan” bases can be.
“Artists can be toxic, but one day we’re going to have to discuss how toxic the “fan” bases can be, they often do more to create divide & conflict between artists – creating problems that the respective artists don’t or didn’t actually have with each other,” he wrote on Twitter.
Ugly’s wife Bontle Modiselle also took time to congratulate Bontle Modiselle her hubby, saying he deserved the win.
“I’m incredibly proud of you,” she wrote.
According to the South African Hip Hop Awards organizing committee, candidates are evaluated based on their performance and accomplishments over a 12-month period.
