‘They simply wanted to be free,’ Tyler Perry said of Harry and Meghan’s decision to start a new life at his $18 million Beverly Hills property.
The latest teaser for Harry and Meghan’s explosive Netflix docuseries, which was released today, has further evidence from their closest confidantes.
Tyler Perry, an actor, comedian, and producer, was among those who assisted the pair as they left their life in the UK and royal duties behind.
The 53-year-old was one of the couple’s closest friends and assisted them in relocating to the United States, providing them his $18 million Beverly Hills mansion as their personal dwelling.
In the teaser for the series’ last three instalments, he has finally come out about the couple’s connection.
“They just wanted to be free. They wanted to be free to love and be happy. I applauded that,” he says.
Harry goes on to say in the trailer that for the couple to be able to “move onto the next chapter you’ve got to finish the first chapter.”
“It gave us a chance to create that home that we always wanted,” said Meghan.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to California after declaring in 2020 that they would stand down from royal obligations.
The couple and their one-year-old son, Archie, lived at Perry’s Beverly Hills residence for a few months.
They later purchased their own huge $14.65 million mansion in Montecito, California, where they currently reside.
Perry previously stated why he gave assistance to the couple, saying it was a “very difficult time for them” and that he wanted to “support them” in any way he could.
The director also stated that Harry and Meghan’s love inspired him, telling the Today show, “’What I know about the two of them – and I wish the world knew – how much these two people love each other.”
“They found each other, out of all these odds against them finding each other, they found each other.
“The love they have is really, really moving and I wanted to do anything I could to support them.”
He went on to say about Meghan and Harry’s relationship: ‘If I don’t have that, what she and Harry have, I don’t want it. That’s really amazing.’
Meghan, 41, opened up about her friendship with Tyler in an interview with The Cut, claiming that he contacted her after she married Harry, 38, in 2018.
He assured her that he was praying for her and that he ‘knew’ the immense stress she was experiencing.
Tyler also assured Meghan that if she ever needed guidance, she could contact him, which she did.
She quickly began to open up to him about her problems, and the two became close despite never meeting in person.
‘Sometimes, you can tell your life story to a stranger on a plane as opposed to some of the people that are closest to you,’ she told The Cut.
Tyler’s offer to house the couple “became, in many ways, the reason that Meghan and Harry started their new life in Southern California,” according to the site.
Tyler paid $4.3 million for the eight-bedroom Tuscan-style estate, which stands on 22 acres of land and has 24,000 square feet of living area.
Perry’s real estate holdings include a $100 million, 40,000-square-foot, eight-bedroom, twelve-bathroom house near Atlanta, Georgia, and a log cabin in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
He also owns a 25-acre private island and a neighbouring seven-acre island in the Bahamas, where he custom-built a home and a series of cottages.
After Meghan and Harry bought their own home, a magnificent property in Montecito only a stone’s throw from another celebrity acquaintance, Oprah, Tyler sent them a substantial welcoming present – a grand piano – with the remark, ‘Write the soundtrack for your life.’
Meghan’s birthday was celebrated with a touching message on Instagram by the Madea star.
“I’ve had a front row seat in your life for the past few years. I’ve watched you endure things that would have broken a lot of people,” he gushed.
“I’m so incredibly proud to see how happy you, your husband, and your kids are now.”
The royal couple, who now have a one-year-old daughter Lilibet and a three-year-old son Archie, subsequently came out about their choice to leave the monarchy on Oprah Winfrey’s show.
They made a slew of shocking claims, including that an anonymous royal expressed “concerns and conversations” about how dark Archie’s complexion would be before his birth, and that Kate Middleton allegedly made Meghan weep over a flower girl clothing before her wedding to Harry.
During the interview, Meghan also stated that she felt “silenced” by the royals and was “given a very clear directive from the moment the world knew she and Harry were dating to always say, ‘No comment.'”
“I’ve always been outspoken, especially about women’s rights, and that’s the sad irony of the last four years – I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice,” she continued.
She also said it felt like she wasn’t being ‘protected’ by them, while “other members of the family” were.
“It was only once we were married and everything started to really worsen that I came to understand that not only was I not being protected, but that they were willing to lie to protect other members of the family,’ she stated. ‘They weren’t willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband.”
