Akhona Makalima to raise SA’s flag at FIFA Women’s World Cup

South Africa’s pride, referee Akhona Makalima has been selected to be part of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Makalima will officiate at the women’s global showpiece that will be staged in Australia and New Zealand between July and August this year.

Makalima who’s made headlines after officiating and doing well in the DStv Premiership and CAF Champions League games over the last 12 months – is ranked as one of the finest referees in Africa.

The Eastern Cape-born official was part of the 2022 CAF African Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco where Banyana Banyana were crowned champions of Africa for the first time in their history.

The 34-year-old has now been appointed as one of 33 referees that will take charge at the global event set to be hosted in Australia and New Zealand between July and August.

Meanwhile, Entertainment SA also posted that Royal AM number one fan Joy ‘Mama Joy’ Chauke was part of the previous FIFA WAORLD Cup in Qatar.

Apart from her as a fan who represented South Africa at the global football showpiece, match officials Victor Gomes and Zakhele Siwela were also part of the tournament.

The two award-winning officials were tasked with handling the match between the reigning world champions, France and Australia.

Gomes and Siwela have since been praised for their display in the match that saw the French claiming a 4-1 win over the Socceroos.
