eTV is mourning the death of an experienced voice artist Bongani Njoli who rose to prominence as the voice of the television station.
Njoli is known for his golden voice behind e.tv’s Friday Action Night movie and weekend blockbuster promos.
Entertainment SA understands that the seasoned radio presenter passed away over the past weekend at the age of 54 but his cause of death remains unknown.
“Everyone at the e.tv family is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Bongani,” e.tv’s Bennum van Jaarsveld said in a statement to News24.
“Bongs was a true legend and part of the e family for 17 years. His untimely passing comes as a shock; he was in the studio with us in December 2022 for a new movie campaign.
“But, unfortunately, as he was too weak to record, we put the campaign on hold. A part of our history is gone with his passing, but we will forever remember him as the voice – our voice.
“Lala Ngoxolo (rest in peace) Bongani Njoli.”
According to the station’s publicist, Van Jaarsveld, he said those who worked closely with the late Njoli would sorely miss his easy-going, gentle manner and professionalism.
City Press previously posted that the former Good Hope FM presenter launched his career with the Cape Town-based television channel in 2000 when he was called back after a previously unsuccessful audition.
Before e.tv, the publication said the qualified teacher had a voice-over gig at the Lion Match company.
During his student years, Njoli hosted shows at UCT Radio back in the 1990s and was the first black deejay on Good Hope FM from 1994.
Bongani’s niece Sibulele Njoli said his uncle did not get sick for too long and started feeling weak in December last year.
“He was not well for a very short space of time. We lived with him KwaLanga,” Sibulele told Drum.
“What made him more ill was being unemployed and feeling helpless. He spent a long time looking for work, but he didn’t give up.”
The talented artist leaves behind his mother, Nomalizo Nozamile Njoli (93), daughter, Thembisa Njoli (23), sister, Nombulelo Njoli, nieces and nephews and will be laid to rest on February 04.
