Capetonian Oliver Hermanus delighted to bag two Oscar nominations

Following the announcement of Oscar Awards nominees, South Africa will be represented by film director Oliver Hermanus.

Hermanus has been included in the list and his maiden international film, Living, scooped two nominations.

The nominees were announced on Tuesday and Oliver has expressed delight in the news, saying it was a total gift to work with a talented crew and artists, such as Bill Nighy.

The 2023 Oscar nominations were announced, with the multiverse adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once receiving 11 nods, leading the pack.

Winners of the industry’s highest honours will be unveiled in Los Angeles on March 12 and the event will be hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel and aired live on Walt Disney Co’s ABC network – they will be beamed live on M-Net (DStv 101) in Mzansi.

Just after bagging four Bafta nominations last week, the film Living received nominations for Best Actor (Nighy) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Kazuo Ishiguro).

“It was a total gift to be afforded the opportunity to work with these two incredible artists,” Hermanus wrote on Instagram.

“I could not be happier that they are being celebrated for their work on Living with Oscar nominations. I want to congratulate our entire team for their tireless work and brilliance in bringing Living to life! Well, fucking done.”

As the blockbuster is set in the outskirts of London in 1952, it follows Mr. Williams (Nighy), a civil servant who has become a small cog in the bureaucracy of rebuilding post-WWII England, as he learns that he has a terminal illness. He goes on a quest to find some meaning to his dull life.

In a previous chat with News24, the director said their production has had exhilarating few months after bagging the Bafta.

“Team Living has had a really exhilarating few months. It’s with great pride that we celebrate four Bafta nominations, including Best British Film! I couldn’t be happier with this reception for my first-ever film outside South Africa!,” he said.

Meanwhile, Entertainment SA has gathered that the Cape Town-born filmmaker is currently busy filming his next project, Mary & George.

This is a drama series that is based on a true story about powerful royal family favourites Mary Villiers and her son George.
