Here’s why the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town didn’t have a New Year’s Eve fireworks display

Some social media users were disappointed that the famed fireworks show at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront did not ring in the new year.

People expressed their dissatisfaction on The V&A Waterfront’s Facebook page, some after travelling thousands of kilometres.

Donald Kau, V&A Waterfront’s head of PR and communications and spokesperson, stated that there has been no fireworks show for the previous two years because to Covid lockdowns.

He stated that this year they chose to conclude the year with a “light beam of hope” to reflect the mood of the moment.

“Considerations on the environmental impact of the fireworks display on wildlife and household pets had also influenced our decision to review the NYE display and look at alternatives.

“We are taking feedback from the public and continue to look at how we can stage a better way to celebrate the start of the new year,” said Kau.

Visitors will expect non-stop entertainment from local performers in the Amphitheatre and around the site from 7pm till the countdown to a “midnight moment finale,” according to the V&A Waterfront’s Facebook page.

Felane MrBizniss Mahlangu: “We brought our kids there to see fireworks, to say we’re disappointed is an understatement. What a horrible experience.”

Paul McDermott: “Having flown over 10 000 km to celebrate Xmas and New Year in Cape Town, extremely disappointed in the NYE party at the V&A , I have attended NYE parties there in the past and they were great fun … Never again … a waste of time and money.”

Similarly, Johannesburg’s New Year’s Eve extravaganza was cancelled.

According to News24, the city has dedicated its resources to assisting individuals harmed by recent storms.

The floods, according to Mayor Mpho Phalatse, devastated infrastructure and left many inhabitants homeless.

“We cannot, in good conscience, prioritise a year-end celebration over the well-being of our residents,” Phalatse told News24.
