There’s no doubting that the fashion moments of 2022 were scorching. TikTok introduced thousands of new styles, series like Stranger Things and Wednesday provided new closet inspiration, Addison Rae ruled the string bikini, and Bella Hadid supplied Y2K reality all year. What fashion trends will be available in 2023 that can possibly compete? A lot, in fact – if you’ve been following all of the trendiest runway looks from NYFW or combing Instagram for up-and-coming designers, you’ll know that there’s some exciting things in the works for 2023’s fashion trends.
Gen Z is steadily changing the tides by influencing fashion houses and designers rather than being inspired by them, a notion you might agree with after looking at the condition of high fashion. Memes surfaced on content creator merch and the Vetements runway at the same time, Regencycore lives on as we revel in sumptuous fashion and await the next edition of Bridgerton, and the brilliant ’80s hues cherished by Fendi and Emily in Paris alike indicate a flamboyant decade’s rebirth.
As we are in to the new year and see the connections between viral moments, TV series and movies, and high fashion runways, we’ve chosen a few rising trends that jump out to us.
Here are some fashion trends you’re going to be seeing on your FYP this year.
Crochetcore
If last year was the year of DIY crochet sweaters and bright patchwork, 2023 is the year of its looser, lighter, more relaxed relative. “Stringy,” explains Emma Rogue, Instagram’s 2023 trend forecaster. “tasteful, but stringy. It’s like subversive basic crochet.”
Look for knitwear with tie-dye, distressed, or graphic designs, and remember that crochet isn’t only for sweaters — the slouchy, hand-crafted yarn can be used to produce everything from shrugs to accessories. “I’ve had friends knit covers to go over their headphones,” Rogue explains.
90s Minimalism
A return to the clean, straightforward styles of the 1990s elevates basic necessities and minimum accessories to crucial relevance for the new season. As the fashion pendulum shifts away from the maximalist loudness that has dominated recent seasons, this revitalised design offers a modern-minimalist perspective.
Barbiecore
We couldn’t put up a list of 2023 fashion trends without including one of TikTok’s most current aesthetics: Barbiecore. The growth of the style was spurred by a rebirth of brilliant pink courtesy to Valentino’s F/W 2022/23 collection, and it was further fueled by Greta Gerwig’s planned dramatisation of the story of the plastic doll starring Margo Robbie. “I love a full monochrome moment. Maybe for 2023 the new thing will be incorporating a contrasting colour,” Rogue speculates. “Or different shades. Like some pastels, some bright pinks, some dark pinks.”
Ruffles, and Feathers
As we love extravagant embellishments and over-the-top accessories, dopamine dressing (a.k.a. mood-boosting apparel) will continue to soar in 2023.
And if styling these pieces in traditionally feminine or maximalist ways feels daunting or strange, don’t do it. “While truly anything goes if you love it, my best advice for feeling confident when trying out a more daring trend is to pair it back to a staple or favorite pieces in your closet,” says Becker. To cool out the style, combine a feather-trimmed crop top with your favourite jeans, or wear a tulle dress with lace-up combat boots.
Denim-on-Denim
“Denim is one of the few things that never go out of style. This season, designers upped the ante on their obsession with classic blue jeans, channeling a decidedly ’90s oversized, slouched, deconstructed mood, and doubled down on their enthusiasm for the trend by offering multiple denim-on-denim full looks that felt both nostalgic and directional for the next spring.”
Cargo pants
It’s always nice when seasonal patterns spill over, displaying their flexibility at other times of the year and justifying our initial investment selections. I’m pleased to say that the most popular silhouette of 2022, cargo pants, will be just as popular in 2023. Designers preserved the pants’ free and spacious fit but added softer fabrics like satin at Fendi and Jil Sander.
