The most-watched programmes and films in 2022 have been announced

Nielsen, a data and market measurement business, has unveiled the most-streamed shows in the United States in 2022.

According to the company’s analysis, Americans consumed around 19.4 million years of content in 2022, a 27% increase from 15 million years in 2021.

“The increase was driven by the breadth of new and expanded services, coupled by the depth of content — particularly streaming originals,” Nielsen said.

Stranger Things, a Netflix original that did extremely well, had its fourth season released in May 2022 after a three-year gap.

In 2022, viewers in the United States watched 52 billion minutes of the sci-fi thriller.

Although it did not surpass The Office’s 57.1 billion minutes during the Covid-19 epidemic in 2020, Nielsen highlighted that the series had a far shorter overall run-time.

“The dominance of original content is underscored even more by the fact that there are only 34 episodes of Stranger Things, while there are 192 episodes of The Office,” Nielsen said.

The procedural criminal drama NCIS was the second most popular show, with 38.1 billion minutes seen across numerous platforms.

Despite having only 18 episodes, Netflix’s Cocomelon ranked third, with 37.8 billion minutes viewed.

According to Nielsen statistics, the top 15 most-streamed shows in the United States are shown in the table below.

In terms of films, the animation genre topped Nielsen’s rankings, with Disney+ films accounting for the great majority of minutes seen.

Encanto on Disney+ had the most viewers by a wide margin, with 27.4 billion minutes seen, compared to Turning Red, which had 11.4 billion minutes watched. The latter was also available to watch on Disney+.

It just beat out Netflix’s Sing 2, which got 11.3 billion minutes of viewing time.

The Adam Project, a sci-fi starring Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, and Zoe Saldana, was the highest-rated live-action film on Netflix.

According to Nielsen, it had around 6.1 billion viewing minutes, putting it in fifth position.

Other live-action top performers were the seventh-ranked Don’t Look Up (5.1 billion minutes) and the tenth-ranked The Gray Man (5 billion minutes).
