Avatar: The Way of Water, directed by James Cameron, is presently the seventh highest-grossing film in US history.
According to AFP, Exhibitor Relations, an industry observer, revealed Sunday that the sequel had dominated the box office for four weeks and had earned $516.8 million in domestic profits and $1.19 billion abroad.
According to several accounts The Way of Water is now the fifth highest-grossing film in the world, after only Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic, and Avengers: Infinity War.
Last Monday, the 68-year-old addressed CNN’s Chris Wallace about the film’s success: “It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels.
“I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.”
Cameron revealed that Avatar 3 is “already in the can” and that they ‘already captured and photographed the whole film.’
“Avatar 4 and 5 are already written. We even have some of 4 in the can,” he added.
In 2020, Disney announced tentative release dates for the sequels following Avatar 2 in 2022; the remaining films would be released in 2024, 2026, and 2028, respectively.
