From politics, and fashion to music and the film industry, there are popular and inspiring individuals who sadly left us in 2022.

Celebrities such as former Big Nuz member Mampintsha, Brazil legend, and icon Pele to none other, US rapper Coolio and Mzansi’s Riky Rick among others.

In this article, ESA selects five of the most talked about celebrities who passed away in the world of sports and the music industry.

MAMPINTSHA:

One of the most celebrated kwaito and Gqom musicians, the former Big Nuz member, Mampintsha succumbed to a stroke just before Christmas.

He spent almost a week in the hospital and unfortunately didn’t recover and left his wife, babes Wodumo, and child including his loved ones behind. His influence in the music scene will definitely be something to cheer about especially in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

TOKOLLO TSHABALALA:

The son of Orlando Pirates staffer Stanley Tshabalala, Magesh’s passing came as a shock not only in the kwaito industry but across the board.

His passing was also confirmed by the DStv Premiership club, Pirates as they paid tributes to the former TKZEE band member.

Magesh passed away in August and the news of passing also touched Manchester United and former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy who once sang with the iconic band.

RIKY RICK:

He is one of the most stylish and inspirational musicians ever produced in South Africa and there’s no doubt his passing really amazed many.

Riky Makhado committed suicide in February and his death was confirmed by his family as they released an emotional statement.

“Son, husband, father, brother, and uncle, Riky ‘Ricky’ Makhado (34) sadly passed away in the early hours of this morning (23rd February) in Johannesburg,” reads part of the statement.

PELE:

Undoubtedly one of the most revered football players in the world, Brazilian legend Pele was hospitalised in Sao Paulo as he battled colon cancer just before Christmas.

The four-time FIFA World Cup winner sadly died at the age of 82 and his death was confirmed by his daughter Kelly Nascimento via social media.

South Africans joined the global sports family in paying tributes to the man who was born, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, who spent Christmas in a hospital ward.

BUSI LURAYI:

ESA posted that it was a sad day for South Africa as the words “RIP” were the order of the day! Lurayi’s death followed that of Tumi Tladi, really wreaked havoc in Mzansi.

The news was broken by social media and entertainment commentator Phil Mphela as he posted that the actress who starred in Netflix’s How to Ruin Christmas has passed away.

“Busisiwe passed away suddenly and was pronounced dead at her residence on Sunday 10.07.2022 by medical personnel. The reason for her death is still unknown as we await the results of the autopsy report,” said the family in a statement.
