The South African football fraternity is divided on social media channels following a video clip of ex-Kaizer Chiefs star Jabu Mahlangu saying Mamelodi Sundowns is killing the local game.
Mahlangu is of the view that Sundowns is buying quality players only to keep them on the bench and that is killing the national side, Bafana Bafana.
‘Shuffle’ also argues that the Premier Soccer League should introduce Financial Fair Play that will ensure all 16 teams have the same advantage when buying players.
Gunning for their sixth DStv Premiership title in a row, there’s no doubt that Sundowns are head and shoulders above the rest especially considering the struggles of Chiefs and Orlando Pirates when it comes to winning trophies.
Mahlangu is trending on Twitter and uploaded a video explaining his views but the clip has attracted contrasting remarks from social media users.
“I’m happy that some fans are talking about it now everywhere even on social media. But something must be done because we can’t be having all the top players, all the talented players in the PSL in place not playing,” he said.
“How are we going to improve? I mean I don’t want to compare but Manchester City didn’t buy all the top players in the Premier League. They are a good team but the league is still competitive. I’m not comparing I’m just making sense.
“Something must be done in our football. No guys. Even Sundowns knows what they are doing is destroying in terms of South African football. Please guys let’s not get personal and don’t insult me because we are talking about football here.”

“Since when Rivaldo, Kapinga and Lebusa play for Bafana Bafana? And who’s stopping them from playing for Bafana Bafana? Sundowns sign unknown players and make them stars, then you cry. The Pirates signed 11 or 12 players this season, do you complain? You are jealous and bitter, rest.”

“This FFP you are requiring will expose your chiefs, they are paying dolly and Billiat millions, where do they make their money from? When Motsipe bought Sundowns you all said money won’t buy success in football now you want FFP.”
@SKHSelby said:
“@Masandawana have elevated @psl football, players are well paid, international exposure, our league is competitive, don’t come here because your team is finished, then you shift the blame, your team capped its expenditure at 3,5m or freebies. You have an intern as a coach. PAIN!”
@Mcebo commented:
“We can argue about this the whole season, it will still remain factual. Signing players only to loan them out and not allow them to play against you is utterly wrong.”
@Obi1Canob reacted:
“How do you know there is no FFP in the PSL? Do you know the size of the Ubuntu-Botho sponsorship deal compared to the Vodacom sponsorship? Do you know the size of the Puma deal compared to the Nike-Adidas deals? No. You probably think Motsepe does an EFT to Sundowns every month.”
