Famed South African musician DJ Maphorisa scooped another accolade as he was named the Best African DJ.
Born Themba Sekowe, Maphorisa bagged the Soundcity MVP Awards Festival accolade which was hosted in Lagos, Nigeria.
Hosted on Saturday at the Eko Convention Centre in the West African country, the awards transitioned from the Soundcity Video Music Awards in 2016.
The information reaching Entertainment SA indicates that the awards recognise outstanding achievements of African artists in 15 various music categories.
The media release also reveals that Nigerian superstar Burna Boy led the nominations with eight nods in seven categories – he was nominated twice in the Best Collaboration Category.
In the African DJ of the Year category, Maphorisa was nominated alongside fellow South African DJs Uncle Waffles and Grammy-winning Black Coffee.
Hip-hop and Amapiano musician Costa Titch also won big as he received the Viewers’ Choice award for Big Flexa, featuring C’buda M, Alfa Kat, Banaba Des, Sdida, and Man T.
Celebrated late rapper, AKA, was nominated in the Best Hip Hop category for Lemons which features Nasty C.
ESA recently reported that judging a viral social media post on Instagram, DJ Maphorisa is now turning his focus on making Afrikaans amapiano music.
South African social media users reacted to the post as shared by Everything South African Music on the social networking platform.
Looking at the reactions, some users felt the song could be a hit but there are those who feel Maphorisa is taking his craft too far.
