Smith foreshadowed the announcement by blasting “Shake Ya Tailfeather” from the Bad Boys II soundtrack over his automobile speakers.
Bad Boys 4 is officially happening!
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence announced the news on their separate Instagram pages on Tuesday, uploading the identical video with the comment, “IT’S ABOUT THAT TIME!”
Smith, 54, began the video by recording himself as he drove to Lawrence’s house, assuring viewers that he would deliver a “hint” as to what his big news was — before “Shake Ya Tailfeather” by Nelly, Diddy, and Murphy Lee, from the Bad Boys II album, began playing over the speakers.
“I wish I was you not knowing what I’m about to show me,” Smith told the camera.
When Smith arrived at his costar’s house, he welcomed Lawrence, 57, who opened the door and inquired, “It’s about that time?”
After the two applauded and hugged, Smith turned the camera on them and said, “It’s about that time!”
“It’s official, y’all,” he continued, confirming production on the fourth film. “Bad boys for life, baby!”
Smith raised four fingers, presumably indicating that the film will be titled Bad Boys 4 Life — but Lawrence quickly reminded his pal that the third picture was already titled Bad Boys 4 Life.
“We shouldn’t have called it that, though. “The 3 was the ‘e,’ ” said Smith, adding with a laugh, “But this is Bad Boys 4. It’s official!”
Lawrence previously stated in a July 2022 interview with Ebony magazine that he had “at least one more” part of the action-comedy series in the works.
The franchise began with 1995’s Bad Boys and has since generated two sequels featuring Smith. The three films grossed more than $840 million at the global box office.
The fourth film comes after Smith made news in March 2022 for hitting Chris Rock in the face at the 2022 Academy Awards. Lawrence “dismiss(ed) speculation” that the upcoming Bad Boys movie would be shelved as a result of the event, according to Ebony.
Of the original, the latter reflected, “For us to come together and prove that we can deliver, and we can pull people into the box office — that two Black stars, two sitcom stars, could make money at the box office [was huge].”
