Striker Cristiano Ronaldo could have helped Manchester United to avoid an embarrassing 7-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.
The Red Devils were thumped on Sunday in the English Premier League and former striker Louis Saha says Ronaldo could have saved the humiliated side.
United suffered their joint-worst-ever competitive defeat on Sunday as they were hit for seven by a rampant Reds side at Anfield Stadium.
The Red Devils squandered good chances in the first half, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford among those to fluff their lines.
However, manager Jurgen Klopp’s troops were clinical and made them pay by taking the lead just before the interval, which opened the floodgates for them to score six in the second half.
Former striker Saha has now suggested that the embarrassing loss might not have happened if Ronaldo was still at the club.
Speaking to Compare.bet, Saha said: “Ronaldo’s departure marked a fresh start for United, and it gave ten Hag a blank page to draw upon, which has allowed him to establish a winning mentality at the club.
“Now that the club’s mindset has improved, I think they’d be doing even better if they had Cristiano up top. Of course, it’s hard to know for sure, but when I see United losing 7-0 to Liverpool, I can only think that Cristiano could have helped.”
Meanwhile, the former Real Madrid star has since joined Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr and he has scored eight goals plus two assists in the Saudi Pro League since joining before the end of 2022.
In addition, manager Eirk ten Hag has issued a serious threat that he will send senior players to the club reserves after their humiliating defeat.
A source told The Mirror: “Ten Hag was obviously furious and told them they were lucky to be getting on the team bus back to Old Trafford and not made to travel back with the fans.
“He warned them all that if anything like that happens again, there won’t be another chance for them and they’ll be put in the Under-21s.”
