Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp demands after Madrid defeat

After their 6-2 aggregate loss against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said they were not at their best.

The German mentor was looking to reverse their 5-2 loss they suffered at home but he urged his men to be aggressive if they wanted to win the European title.

Liverpool have been eliminated from the League Cup and FA Cup and are sixth in the English Premier League on 42 points after a 1-0 defeat at relegation-threatened AFC Bournemouth on Saturday.

“If you want to win the competition, you have to be outstanding. We weren’t tonight, so that’s why it’s then fair that we go out,” Klopp told reporters.

“They had the better chances, Ali had to make two sensational saves to keep us in the game and that’s the reason.

“Again, if you want to go through you need to be outstanding; if you want to win the game, you need to be really good. In the end, Madrid were the better team and that’s why the right team went through to the next round.”

Meanwhile, legend Jamie Carragher praised Klopp but said there were too many mistakes in the defeat in Madrid.

“That can’t continue, what’s happened this season and the amount of times he’s been lacking defensively,” Carragher told CBS Sport.

“He’s (Klopp) won everything, done fantastic and I’m so proud of him, but he needs help. He needs to have a long think at the end of the season about where he is as a right-back.

“I’ve always defended him and he’s played for one of the best teams in the world. That means you do a lot more attacking than you defend.

“We all know his defending isn’t good enough – and I don’t think it will ever be good enough.

“We’re talking about a player who’s played 260 games now – it is not going to massively improve. When Liverpool drop off and aren’t one of the best in Europe, now they’re one of the pack. They now do more defending, and less attacking. You see the worst traits of Trent and not his strengths going forward and that’s a massive problem.”
