“Celebrate Our Differences”- Lizzo Protests Tennessee Policy

Grammy-award winner, Lizzo performed in Knoxville, Tennessee Friday night. The social activist protested the Tennessee policy by bringing out a number of drag queens including Aquaria, Kandy Muse, Asia O’Hara and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, to the stage at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The “Special” hitmaker is protesting the Tennessee state’s legislation designed to restrict drag performances in public. The state became the first in the nation to ban such performances; the law will take effect on 1st July.

Lizzo said during her performance, “In light of recent and tragic events and current events, I was told by people on the internet, ‘Cancel your shows in Tennessee,’ ‘Don’t go to Tennessee,’ Their reason was valid, but why would I not come to the people who need to hear this message the most?”

“The people who need to feel this release the most?” Lizzo said to cheers in the crowd.

The singer added, “Why would I not create a safe space in Tennessee where we can celebrate drag entertainers and celebrate our differences and celebrate fat, Black, women?”

The activist took to her Instagram to share her performance. Aquaria, a popular drag performer responded to Lizzo’s post on her performance

“Thank you so much for the platform for me and the drag race girls and especially for uplifting the queens on Tennessee! Those ladies are all so strong and brave and I know tonight was definitely the best of a tricky situation for everyone. Thanks for shedding light for our friends who definitely need our hand these days. We appreciate it.”

Lizzo also brought out the Sesame Street character Elmo during her performance. Sesame Street is “A longtime favorite of children and adults, and a staple of PBS, “Sesame Street” bridges many cultural and educational gaps with a fun program.”

Elmo official Instagram account also commented on lizzo’s post on how he felt “special.”
