Doja Cat claims she’s ready to prove she’s a talented rapper, and in order to do so, she’s putting her pop flair on hold, maybe for good.
The musician, who has been branded many things but never exactly fits into any given box, turned to Twitter on Saturday to indicate she’s heard the people loud and clear… particularly, that her bars aren’t quite up to scratch and that her rap prowess has been very lacklustre thus far.
It’s a critique Doja has received since she burst onto the scene, especially given the majority of her best successes are straight-up bubble-gum pop songs where she sings.
Now, Doja claims she’ll show everyone what she’s up to on her next album… writing, etc “I also agree with everyone who stated my rap verses are mostly mid-tempo and clichéd. I’m sure they are. I wasn’t trying to prove anything; I just like producing music, but I’m sick of hearing you say I can’t, so I’ll try.” In other words, Doja will flex her muscles in due time.
Much was addressed in her comments to other Twitter users who responded to the news, including the fact that she considers herself a rapper… on par with Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, Cardi B, and other notable femcees, it appears.
Doja also claims that mainstream music no longer excites her… and that she want to shift her focus to a different sound and feel. Finally, she claims she is “talking her s***” on her latest endeavour, “Hellmouth.”
It’s fascinating that she wants to branch out into full out rap, given her present level of popularity. Doja has released a number of chart-topping singles, including ‘Say So,’ ‘Kiss Me More,’ ‘You Right,’ ‘Woman,’ and ‘Best Friend,’ among others.
That latter one is more rap-oriented, but her mainstream forays have proven to be profitable… and award candidates. She’s already won a Grammy and a slew of other awards for her pop-focused albums. The fact that she wants to move away from it is risky.
Nonetheless, she seems convinced she can accomplish it… and considering her track record, there’s little need to doubt her. Doja Cat is one of the greatest names in music right now, so we’re confident she’ll put out a great album with great production and features.
There have been rumours that she intends to release her next album solo, with no collaborations, although there is no evidence to support that claim. She has, however, teased several title names… such as ‘Balut,’ ‘Wet Vagina,’ and ‘Agora Hills.’ I have to admit, those sound like pure bangers.
