Following their 2-0 defeat against Real Madrid on Wednesday night at Santiago Bernabeu, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard refuses to throw in the towel.
The Blues legend insists they can still stun the Spanish La Liga giants when they welcome them at Stamford Bridge next week.
Goals courtesy of Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio gave Madrid the upper hand in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie.
Carlo Ancelotti’s charges dominated the proceedings on the night in almost every department while the Blues had a man sent off in the form of Ben Chilwell.
Speaking after the match, Lampard said he believes tney can overturn the result at home. “I just said to the players, ‘special things can happen at Stamford Bridge’,” he told BT Sport.
“They’re a very good team but we have to believe. I’m proud of the 10 men. The disappointing thing is that you give away a set piece from switching off… for the second goal.
“I don’t think with 10 men they carved us open – that was due to the spirit. I think at that time in the game, we had our chances.”
The English Premier League club will need to score three goals and not concede or score two goals to keep their hopes alive – a 2-2 draw on aggregate could force the tie to be decided on penalties.
When asked about his former player whom he managed in the PL betweeen 2010 and 2012, Carlo spoke higlhy of the retired midfielder.
“I have a good memory of him (Lampard). A fantastic player and I hope – for him – he will be a fantastic manager… but not necessarily on Tuesday,” he said.
Meanwhile, Lampard will now turn his focus on their upcoming EPL encounter against Brighton & Hove Albion at home on Saturday afternoon.
