Watch as champs Sundowns receive guard of honour from City

Mamelodi Sundowns are home and dry as far as their sixth DStv Premiership title chase is concerned but they were held to a goalless draw by Cape Town City on Tuesday night.

The Brazilians claimed the championship with seven matches to spare and they are now looking to break records – yet their 80 points target was spoiled by the Citizens at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

If they had won the match in Tshwane including the remaining six, they would register a record of 78 – they now have 60 points from 24 matches.

Looking at social media reactions where the CAF Champions League quarter-finalists received a guard of honour from coach Eric Tinkler’s troops, many fans feel the current squad is undoubtedly the best by far.

Coached by Rulani Mokwena, the Tshwane giants are also touted as favourites to clinch this year’s Champions League as they will discover their Last Eight opponents this week.

“It was a bit difficult because we live in a digital and social media space, and whether you like it or not, players will know the situation because it is posted on the social feeds,” said Mokwena.

“My speech to them before the game was to congratulate them because they already knew that the title was in the bag. They need to be congratulated because in South Africa it is downplayed and maybe we are victims of our own success.

“People undermine the difficulties of winning a league title. It is the hardest competition to win because you have to play against 15 opponents home and away and the competition lasts for about eight months. There is no competition in football as long as the league.”

@Ryan said:

“FFP needs to check Sundowns out…they’re turning the PSL into a Farmers League with SAME winners every season…no one can compete with Downs’ ridiculous wealth its really not fair.”

@Osman wrote:

“Unplayable, unrelenting, and simply unprecedented, viva KA BO YELLOW.”

@Ele posted:

“We Are Still Champions and its remaining six Guard of Honour.”

@MrGeneral reacted:

“Mokoena should have used players we played with on CAF they played better than today..Mbule, AB should have been given a chance also..”
